Salary Range:  $150,000 – $200,000

General Responsibilities:
The University of Oregon seeks applications for the Associate Vice President (AVP) for Public Affairs Communication. The Office of Public Affairs Communications includes media relations, digital communications, internal communications, emergency communications, and counsel to university constituencies, including the Office of the President.

Reporting to the Vice President for University Advancement, the AVP serves as the chief communications officer of the university and will lead and manage internal and external communications strategy and execution. The AVP will provide strategic vision and leadership in the creation and implementation of communications initiatives, including fostering relationships with media, community leaders, external organizations, students, and other campus constituencies. This position will serve as a member of the President’s leadership team and will work closely with the President, the President’s Chief of Staff, the University Secretary, and the Associate Vice President for Marketing and Brand Management among other senior leadership on campus.

Qualifications: Required qualifications include: bachelor’s degree; and a minimum of seven years of demonstrated senior leadership experience overseeing a communications effort in a complex organization similar in scope and complexity to the University of Oregon. Other qualifications include: advanced knowledge of the strategies and best practices for communications, including sophisticated and creative use of social media and other forms of digital communications; experience working directly with media on background and on the record; an appreciation for and understanding of higher education; experience managing teams and budgets in a highly complex organization, including experience hiring, developing, and retaining high-performing professional teams; outstanding management and planning skills, including the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously in a decentralized environment; excellent written and verbal communication skills; and a commitment to and experience with promoting and enhancing diversity and equity. The successful candidate will be: dynamic, forward thinking, and creative, with high ethical standards and an appropriate professional image; a strategic visionary with sound technical skills, analytical ability, good judgment, and strong operational focus; organized and self-directed who is politically astute and a team player; articulate and able to relate to people at all levels of the organization; decisive and with a “big picture” perspective; collegial, with a collaborative approach, a track record of building strong relationships with diverse stakeholders, and the ability to build bridges and consensus among individuals and organizations across the university; and able to communicate and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

Preference will be given to candidates who have: an advanced degree or experience in higher education. Prior to hire, the finalist in this position is subject to a criminal background check.
