The Oregon Bach Festival, the University of Oregon’s Grammy-winning summer music festival, is seeking a dynamic Director of Communications to develop, implement and manage successful marketing strategies.  The ideal candidate will have extensive marketing and business strategy experience and the highest level of integrity to help in establishing our new Artistic Director.  Located 110 miles south of Portland, the University of Oregon has an enrollment of 24,447.  The Eugene metro area (pop. 351,715) is in a region noted for its active quality of life and progressive cultural environment.  We are about an hour’s drive from the Pacific coast and the Cascade Mountains.  The University is an AAU research institution and a member of the Pac-12 conference.

General Position Description:

This post has directorial responsibility for developing and overseeing implementation of communications and marketing strategies for the Oregon Bach Festival and the UO Chamber Music Series, and reports to the OBF President and General Director.  Duties include:

  • Implement strategies for earned income streams, including ticket sales, merchandising, education programs, and program book advertising.

  • Develops, executes and manages local and national campaign strategies including marketing communication plans (i.e. advertising, promotions, DM, media, sponsorship, digital etc) and creative

  • Supervise contract personnel in production of Festival communications materials including brochures, program books, sales materials, broadcasts, videos, website, etc.

  • Direct all OBF ticket offices in implementation of ticket sales procedures, policies, and pricing strategies

  • Maintain relationships with media; disseminate press information.

  • Determines and manages the content of the OBF website.

  • Brainstorm new and creative growth strategies.

  • Devise strategies to drive online traffic to the OBF website.

  • Represent OBF in professional organizations and public speaking functions

  • Collaborate with senior staff to analyze issues and develop strategies to expand organizational capacity

  • Negotiate media sponsorships and in-kind agreements

  • Collaborate with Development director to develop, write, and report on grant applications for marketing projects

  • Consult and create Fall and Spring Festival Solicitation mailings with UO Annual Giving and OBF Director of Corporate and Donor Relations.

  • Supervise marketing interns, work-study students, and volunteers

  • Analyze marketing data and furnish reports for senior staff and board of directors

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education required

  • Five years' proven experience with communications, public relations, marketing strategies, and social media with successively high levels of achievement.

  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of the prevalent social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) and social viral marketing techniques.

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and excellent oral and written communication skills required.

  • Must be able to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with university staff, faulty, and others.

  • Proficiency in the use of personal computers with computer software including Excel, web applications, email marketing tools.

  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.

  • Working knowledge and experience utilizing the digital world, internet, and social networks to grow brand recognition.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience in or working knowledge of an arts performance environment

  • Strong knowledge of online marketing best practices.

  • Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator.


The salary range is $65,000-$85,000, dependent on qualifications and experience.  The University offers an excellent package of employee benefits, including health and dental insurance, employer-paid retirement, sick and vacation leave, and tuition benefits for employee and eligible dependents.
