The Academic Adviser/African American Specialist and Outreach Coordinator reports to the Director of Graduation and Post- Graduation Success in the Center for Multicultural Academic Excellence. The Academic Adviser/African American Specialist and Outreach Coordinator will serve all students, but with particular attention to advising and outreach to African American students. Duties will include serving as the lead academic Adviser for African American students on campus; assisting African American students with academic planning, retention and post-graduation planning; serving as a resource for staff and faculty concerning African American experiences, learning styles and issues in Higher Education; working with faculty and staff on campus to facilitate leadership and educational development opportunities for African American and other historically under-represented students on campus; working with other academic Advisers to promote collaborative educational and professional development opportunities; and outreaching to and collaborating with African American civic, religious, political, social and educational organizations to facilitate African American student success.
General Description of Duties:
Work with African American students, campus community, and others to facilitate the retention of African American students.
Design and coordinate retention programming for African American students from first year students to graduate students.
Develop a strategic plan for the advisement, retention and post-graduation planning of African American students.
Assist with cultural and academic support events including: African American Graduation Reception, Classification Change, Black History Month, Ambassador’s Program and pipeline programs.
Promote interaction with African American education professionals and others with expertise in African American issues.
Support the African American Opportunities Program, African American Student Visitation Day in conjunction with the Enrollment Management.
Working with OEI and Enrollment Management to facilitate agreements with community colleges to promote 2+2 agreements.
Track data related to institutional retention/graduation rates for African American students and prepare related reports to submit to OEI.
Assist current students with scholarship and funding applications.
Assist African American students with graduate school selection and admissions processes, including school search, test prep, funding opportunities.
Work with other academic Advisers and CMAE colleagues to coordinate retention programs and functions with other under-represented students.
Represent OEI at student-related community events around the State, but especially in Eugene and Portland.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Graduation and Post-Graduation Success
Knowledge of and experience with African Americans in Oregon or the Pacific Northwest;
Demonstrated sensitivity to, respect for and understanding of the academic and social developmental needs of students, including African American students and those from underrepresented groups;
Excellent oral and written communication skills;
Experience with and a deep understanding of the unique experiences and needs of African American Students;
Familiarity with higher education systems and programs that serve students;
Direct and long-term experience with African American communities
2-3 years' experience in higher education
Familiarity with enrollment processes, retention services, and University-based programs
