Academic Adviser/Personal Counselor for Student Support Services - Archive

This position is for a full time, nine month Academic Adviser/Personal Counselor to provide comprehensive information, advising and counseling, referrals and support to students participating in a federally funded TRIO program, Student Support Services (SSS). 

Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct assessment of student academic and personal needs, prescribe appropriate support, document activities to meet UO, State, and SSS federal protocol, and monitor progress
  • Counsel students 1:1 or through group work, workshops and referral.  Serve as resource consultant to SSS staff
  • Provide proactive academic advising and personal counseling to SSS students and track their academic progress
  • Contribute to collaborative efforts to meet grant goals, participate in staff meetings, assist in conducting program evaluations and track services for annual reports
  • Develop knowledge, skills and strong referral systems, including local support

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with students from diverse backgrounds challenged by social or economic factors
  • Demonstrate ability to provide 1:1 personal counseling that addresses personal issues and stress that disrupt academic progress
  • Demonstrated ability to provide guidance that leads students to make informed and reasonable decisions in setting goals, selecting classes and majors, exploring careers, managing finances and stress, engaging in campus life, and meeting multiple responsibilities

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Sound knowledge of higher education organizational structures and operational procedures
  • Strong academic advising or personal counseling record with college age students
  • Ease working with electronic recordkeeping

Finalist for the position must complete a background check.

Salary:  $31,000- $35,000 for full-time, 9-month appointment
