Job Context

Information Services (IS) is the central information technology unit for the University of Oregon.  IS provides and supports campus-wide services in the areas of technology support, enterprise applications, middleware, information security, systems and operations, and data networking and telecommunications.  IS also includes the Advanced Network Technology Center (ANTC) and works closely with the Network for Education and Research in Oregon (NERO).

NERO provides high speed network connectivity and Internet services to partners in support of education and research activities throughout the state of Oregon.  The NERO Network consists of a high speed core network with interconnection hubs located in Portland, Corvallis, and Eugene, supporting both higher education and K-12 institutions.

This position works under the direction of the Director of NERO.  This position will serve in a lead capacity and will guide and supervise the work of other NERO and Network and Telecommunication Services (NTS) staff as assigned, which may include students, classified staff, or officers of administration.  This position will require frequent travel to NERO network sites for maintenance and support as well as participation in an on-call rotation. 

This position will make autonomous decisions on the installation, configuration, and maintenance of networks in the best interests of NERO, Information Services, and the University of Oregon.  This position has no budget authority but will evaluate and recommend the use of new network technologies and equipment to be used by NERO to support the NERO Network and University missions.  This position reports to the Director of NERO who reports to the Vice Provost of Information Services/CIO.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support network infrastructure critical to the operation of NERO Network services, including installation, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of various networking components
  • Support UNIX services critical to the operation of NERO Network services and writes applications that facilitate these support functions. These services include, but are not limited to DNS, DHCP, AAA, NMS, and LDAP
  • Develop network management strategies, applications, and software/hardware facilities that will ensure the correct operation of the NERO Network
  • Provide NERO Network documentation and collects statistics using software and hardware tools
  • Consult with NERO partners and University support personnel, faculty, and staff to assess future needs and diagnose problems
  • Provide technical support and research and development for managing high-speed networking projects, such as Internet2
  • Plan and implement state-wide network strategies supporting education and research computing
  • Maintain a high level of professional expertise in areas such as emerging network technologies and attends relevant professional conferences and standards forums, presenting and publishing his or her findings and research results in professional literature
  • Oversee and direct the work of other NERO staff and NTS staff as appropriate

Qualification Requirements

The following are minimum requirements for this position.

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.  Significant, relevant, and clearly demonstrated work experience may be considered in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree
  • Three years of network hardware and software experience configuring and managing Ethernet switches and/or high-end routers from a variety of vendors such as Cisco Systems and Juniper Networks
  • Fluency in PERL and other programming and scripting languages
  • Understanding of UNIX/Linux internals and UNIX/Linux systems administration
  • Technical understanding of principles of Layer-2/Layer-3 network design and data communications
  • Demonstrated experience with TCP/IP and related routing protocols
  • Proven skills in technical writing, verbal communications, consulting and/or teaching
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, either independently or as part of a team in a rapidly changing technical environment
  • Ability to travel to remote locations within Oregon for maintenance, installation, or troubleshooting of on-site equipment
  • U.S. Citizenship or other eligibility for employment in the U.S. under currently prevailing federal regulations
  • Candidates with experience serving the needs of diverse populations are strongly desired

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Understanding of IPv6, IP Multicast, BGP, Voice over IP, MPLS and/or VRF technologies
  • Understanding of Ethernet, Spanning Tree Protocol, VLANs, Frame Relay, xDSL and WiFi wireless
  • Knowledge of Cisco IOS on a range of hardware platforms
  • Knowledge of Cisco ASA OS firewall platforms

Salary Range

Starting salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.
