The University of Oregon's American English Institute (AEI), a Program of the Department of Linguistics, invites applications for the position of Career Track Instructor of English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) beginning Fall 2013.  This position is a nine-month, fixed term, renewable contract.  We have 15 new, full time positions to fill due to program expansion.  Salary base minimum, $40,000, is negotiable depending on experience and qualifications.  Summer teaching is possible at an additional one third of the nine-month salary.  Excellent medical, dental, vision, and retirement benefits, including staff rates for tuition for employee or family members.  (http://benefits.uoregon.edu/)

The AEI is an academic unit with three missions:  instruction, teacher training, and research.  The instructional mission encompasses five student populations, Intensive English Program (IEP) students, matriculated university students, sponsored programs, e-learning programs, and international teaching assistants.

Qualifications

  1. M.A. or Ph.D. in TESOL, Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, or very closely related field.  Applicants may be asked to submit transcripts.
  2. Minimum of 2 years (or equivalent) full-time teaching experience in a university-based ESOL program, including time in a U.S. university.
  3. Experience in communicative language teaching methodology, skills integration, task-based learning, and proficiency in using technology as an integrated component of classroom instruction.
  4. Experience in teaching across program levels and skills.
  5. Demonstrated engagement in high quality professional development and leadership in the field.  Preferred candidates will demonstrate evidence of developing expertise and professional activities in one or more of the following areas: language teacher training, classroom-based research, EAP, ESP, e-learning, materials and curriculum development, or assessment.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of an instructional team.
  7. International experience and an interest in further international experience preferred.
  8. Proficiency in English.  Hiring may be contingent upon English proficiency assessment.
  9. Demonstrated potential to contribute positively to the University’s diverse community.

Responsibilities

  1. Full-time ESOL instruction within different programs of the AEI.
  2. Ongoing development and evidence of excellence in one or more areas of professional development relevant to the mission of the AEI.
  3. Participation in AEI development projects.
  4. Possible administrative work in program coordination.
  5. Interaction with students and faculty in Linguistics.
  6. Possible teaching assignments in the Linguistics Language Teaching Specialization MA program or other teacher training programs if background and qualifications are appropriate.
