Educational and Community Supports is an autonomous research institute within the College of Education.  Our innovative behavioral research is the foundation for applications and training programs that help schools create and maintain healthy learning environments and help children through early diagnosis of cognitive and behavioral problems.

ECS is a leader in providing scientifically validated systems that schools can use to promote the self-development and maximize the learning potential of students.

The behavior support and educational survey data accumulated by our applications constitutes one of the largest educational research databases of its kind.  Our applications and services, incorporating leading research datasets and public education data, are used by over 9,000 schools throughout the United States and in other countries.

Positions Sought

ECS may be seeking software developers with a variety of types of expertise on a limited duration basis of 6 months to one year with the possibility of renewal up to three years.  These positions are subject to a criminal background check.


Some qualifications apply to all positions, others vary by position.

All Positions

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field and 2+ years' development experience or bachelor’s degree in other field and 4+ years' development experience
  • Demonstrated experience with object oriented design and development techniques including use of UML or similar, design patterns, application lifecycle management
  • Familiar with relational databases, preferably SQL Server, and with data modeling
  • Agile development experience
  • Ability to ensure that requirements are effectively translated into technical specifications and designs, including comprehensive testing and QA plans
  • Ability to communicate respectfully and effectively with customers to gather requirements, present releases, and discuss issues
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Varies by Position

  • Knowledge and experience with web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, etc.)
  • Strong background in .NET technologies (C#, ASP.NET including MVC, Winforms, WPF, Entity Framework)
  • Strong background in PHP and GWT (Google Web Toolkit)
  • Relational database development and data modeling experience, preferably using SQL Server
  • Knowledgeable about and at least 2 years’ experience with SharePoint 2007/2010/2013 object model and development process, including webparts, forms, and workflows
  • Unit testing experience

Additional Desired Experience

  • Scrum methodology
  • Automated functional testing
  • Experience with software localization
  • Continuous integration and build automation
  • HTML 5
  • SQL Reporting Services (SSRS)

Duties May Include

Positions associated with this pool could be engaged in projects that involve development and maintenance in any of the following areas:

  • PHP web server code
  • GWT code for web clients
  • ASP.NET web applications, largely based on the MVC pattern
  • ASP.NET web service and interoperability applications
  • Entity Framework and stored procedure-based data access components
  • SharePoint 2010 and 2013 webparts, workflows, and solutions
  • Stored procedures, functions, and other database objects in SQL Server 2008/2012
  • Internationalization of ASP.NET and PHP/GWT applications

FTE:  Varies from .50 FTE to 1.00 FTE

Salary Range:  $60,000 to $75,000

Start Date:  May 1, 2013
