Job Location:  University of Oregon School of Law
Reports to:  Assistant Dean of Admissions
Term:  1.0 FTE Position, annual renewal, based on performance, funding and need.  
Rank:  Officer of Administration
Salary Range:  50-65K (based on 1.0 FTE) To be determined based on experience and qualifications.

General Responsibilities

The assistant/associate director of admissions reports to the assistant dean of admissions of the University of Oregon School of Law.  The assistant/associate director works closely with the assistant dean to annually enroll a first year class that meets the enrollment goals established for the School of Law and standards required by the American Bar Association.  Together with the assistant dean, the assistant/associate director helps create and implement annual recruitment and enrollment initiatives that are part of the strategic planning goals of the School of Law.  Under the direction of the assistant dean, the assistant/associate director assists with managing the annual admissions calendar, admissions communications, JD recruitment and counseling, and the review of application, scholarship, and fellowship opportunities.

Major Duties

Admissions strategy and daily workflow management 20%

Per the admissions recruitment and yield strategy set by the assistant dean of admissions, the assistant/associate director develops the annual calendar of activities and events required to meet the strategic objectives.  Responsible for efficient workflow and regularly updating the assistant dean on progress and any challenges, the assistant/associate director oversees the following student positions: Connections Coordinator (10-15 hours per week, January-August), Minority Outreach Assistant (10-15 hours per week, year-round), “Oregon Law Insiders” (approximately 25-30 law student volunteers, year-round), and two undergraduate work-study students (8-10 hours per week, year round).  Ensures adequate office coverage during business hours and at law school on-campus events so that the needs of prospective student are met.  Supervises the office in the absence of the assistant dean.  Coordinates the recruitment events calendar and the selection of admissions staff, alumni, current students, and other representatives to attend recruitment events.    

Admissions Communications  40%

With assistant dean’s oversight and in collaboration with the School of Law Communications team, the assistant/associate director coordinates and implements all processes, activities and events related to recruitment and enrollment communications strategy.  This includes, but is not exclusive to training of admissions staff; outreach through email, Candidate Referral Service (CRS), and postcards and letters; Application Status Online (ASO); decision letters; and admission packet.  Accountable for admissions use of social media including, but not limited to, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram.  Coordinates communications around student financial aid, seat deposit payment, and 1L scholarship award data with the University Financial Aid Office.  Works with Communications team to ensure that admission web content is regularly reviewed (and comprehensively once a year) and is current, accurate, relevant, and consistent in its messaging, conforming to established standards for University and School of Law graphic identity.

Responsible for planning and executing recruitment and yield events such as Admitted Students Visiting Day, Discover Law, Double Ducks, White Stag, etc.  Manages the Oregon Law Insiders Program (“OLIs”), the law student ambassador program; “Duck Calls,” the alumni-admitted student yield program; and the faculty-admitted student yield program.  Coordinates the selection and use of non-admissions office volunteers such as alumni, current students, or other staff (ex: Career Center) at recruitment events.

JD recruitment and admission counseling 20%                                               

Explains academic programs, admissions and financial aid procedures, and the achievements of the law school community in an informative, accurate, and persuasive manner to prospective students and other interested constituencies.  Is first contact for law school visitors.  Presents in individual and group settings both on-campus and off-campus at events such as law school information fairs, LSAC Forums, graduate and professional school events, diversity events, and individual school or department presentations locally and throughout the country.  Coordinates use of non-admissions office representatives such as alumni, current students, or other staff (ex: Career Center) at selected recruitment events.  Oversees LSAC CRS (Candidate Referral Service) outreach program.  Provides applicant counseling through email, text, Skype, over the telephone, and written correspondence as is appropriate.  Manages campus visit program.  Oversees planning for yield activities such as admitted student follow-up programs (ex: Duck Calls, Admitted Student Visiting Day) coordinating with office staff, and faculty, alumni, and students.  Monitors progress of Connections Coordinator and Minority Outreach Assistant.  Assists in outreach to undergraduate advisors (pre-law, diversity, etc).

Application, scholarship, and fellowship review 20%                                     

Is ex-officio member of the faculty admissions committee.  Is principal second reader, after the assistant dean, of JD applications. Evaluates files and recommends admit, deny, and wait-list decisions.  Provides input to assistant dean for scholarship policy and scholarship awards.  Is liaison to Wayne Morse Center for Politics and Law and the Environmental and Natural Resources Center and faculty members in the selection of 1L Fellows.  Provides weekly and annual reports to the assistant dean monitoring applicants and scholarships and fellowships.  Works with the admissions assistant to organize admissions committee training and to ensure efficiency of application review process.  Works with admissions assistant to ensure integrity of application data, LSAC ACES2 processes, hard-copy files, and historical records.  Also, works with admissions assistant to plan the annual admissions committee training meeting.  Collects and analyzes data and creates accurate reports (in Excel and Crystal) for use by the assistant dean and others.

Job Qualifications/Requirements


  • BA from an accredited university or college and three years of increasing professional responsibility, or, JD from an ABA-accredited law school and two years of professional experience
  • Strong writing and editing skills that demonstrate experience developing narratives that persuasively share information
  • Demonstrated strong organizational, administrative, and interpersonal skills that indicate applicant possesses discretion, diplomacy, and ability to maintain confidentiality and the ability to work as part of a team or independently
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and utilize a range of communication channels with diverse groups of students, faculty, administrators, staff, and members of the bench and bar from a wide range of backgrounds
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook (or similar software) and experience collecting, analyzing, and accurately reporting data
  • Ability to travel independently, locally, regionally, and nationally by various means of travel


  • JD, or an advanced degree in a related field from an accredited university or college
  • Understanding of and enthusiasm for legal education and legal profession
  • Proficiency in social media and experience with website maintenance
  • Experience providing advising or counseling
  • Experience in admissions or other student affairs setting
  • Experience with student information software
  • Supervisory experience.  Enjoy helping solve complex challenges and implementing solutions
