Invitation for Applications

The University of Oregon (UO) invites applications for the position of Executive Director of the University of Oregon Academic Extension.  The Executive Director provides leadership in the University of Oregon’s commitment to expand the accessibility and reach of its academic programs and its strengths in instruction, research, and service.  We seek an Executive Director with knowledge of rapidly evolving changes in instructional and program delivery for increasingly diverse and distributed student and professional communities.  The successful candidate will embody both strategic vision and operational savvy to inspire our campus as we navigate the transforming face of higher education.


The UO is a comprehensive public research university that serves its students and the people of Oregon, the nation, and the world through the creation and transfer of knowledge in the liberal arts, the natural and social sciences, and the professions.  It is a member of the Association of American Universities and accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.  The UO offers nearly 300 comprehensive academic programs and more than 25 research centers and institutes, serving close to 25,000 students.

Our public mission requires that the UO work to improve accessibility to higher education by removing barriers to participation by students, professionals, and others seeking knowledge and credentials for enhancing their futures.  The University of Oregon Academic Extension (UOAE) provides critical academic and operational leadership and infrastructure in support of this public mission.  UOAE facilitates and delivers unique and traditional learning opportunities on campus and off, spanning a range of campus-based, face-to-face experiences, online courses, and lifelong learning opportunities.


Reporting to the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, the Executive Director provides strategic direction and vision for Academic Extension and is responsible to develop and maintain an administrative infrastructure and culture that encourages and supports activity among the faculty, in alignment with the research and instructional mission of the UO.   The Executive Director is expected to work closely with academic leadership, particularly the academic deans and faculty, to foster innovations in academic and professional programming to serve non-residential and residential participants and students.

The Office of Academic Extension is located in Eugene at the Downtown Baker Center, in close proximity to the residential UO campus, with additional locations in Portland and Bend.


The Director will:

1.      Provide oversight of idea development, program design, delivery, and implementation for both credit and non-credit AE activities campus-wide, throughout the state, and into broader international settings;

2.      Collaborate with academic and administrative leadership to integrate activities developed and delivered through UOAE with academic programming across the schools and colleges;

3.      Catalyze imagination and energy from faculty and other professionals and allies to expand the reach of UO programs to new communities across the spectrum of interests—from early learners in middle and high school, to educational development for practicing professionals, to adults completing degrees or certificates outside conventional residential boundaries, through lifelong learning at any age;

4.      Oversee adherence to existing UO business protocols, while designing AE systems that enable responsiveness to market-driven opportunities;

5.      Provide coordination and oversight of intake of data, FERPA rules, records retention, for both credit and non-credit AE activities, working cooperatively with the Registrar’s Office; and

6.      Provide coordination and oversight of AE participant fees (varied payment types, secured transactions, links to registration records), and internal accounting (utilization of index codes, connections to instructor appointments, program expense processing, agency accounts), working with Accounts Receivable, Finance & Accounting, Purchasing & Contract Services, and School/College staff.


1.      An earned graduate degree from an accredited institution (master’s required, doctorate preferred);

2.      Significant administrative experience that demonstrates a deep understanding of, and commitment to, the historical, current, and future options and opportunities in the field of lifelong learning in higher education;

3.      Demonstrated record of success working effectively across traditional campus-based academic and operational units, as well as within external professional and non-academic constituencies;

4.      Demonstrated achievement in higher education in the management of personnel, budget administration, strategic planning, and comprehensive academic planning;

5.      Demonstrated ability to provide visionary and practical leadership in the use of technology and information systems to support teaching, learning, and administration; and

6.      Demonstrated acumen to manage UOAE business affairs in a competitive and challenging marketing setting.
