The Zebrafish International Resource Center (ZIRC, zebrafish.org ) located at the University of Oregon is seeking a full-time Systems Administrator/Programmer.  Major activities will include system administration of the ZIRC web, database, and file servers, general troubleshooting, and assisting staff with client computers and applications.  Other activities will include assistance in the development of web-based applications for tracking the status of orders and shipments, pathology case services, and in-house research.  

The ability to integrate into a diverse work group is essential.  Previous experience in a professional software development group is desirable, but not essential.   

The successful candidate should have a Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Management Information Systems, or related fields.  Experience in Biology, Biomedicine, Genetics or a related field also required as this position interacts directly with biological reactions and requires knowledge of the field and research activities.     

The annual salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Benefits (health insurance, retirement, etc.) are paid by the University of Oregon.

Responsibilities & Duties

Operating Systems Administrator

  • Maintain Mac OS X and Windows Servers
  • Maintain system and database backup/recovery
  • Experience installing and upgrading Mac OS X, Windows XP 
  • Configure and manage printers
  • Manage security systems: Firewalls, Certificate Management, Log Scanning, Intrusion detection software, SCADA System administration
  • Maintain and upgrade wireless devices (Symbol hand-held, iPad) & software
  • Networking/TCP/IP
  • Apache in a Unix environment
  • Strong documentation skills
  • Strong intrapersonal and problem solving skills
  • Proven ability to work well in a team environment
  • Strong understanding /knowledge of Biology, genetics, and research methods 

Analyst Programmer

• Structured software/system development projects:

o intranet administration applications

o e-commerce site management

Experience with any of the following a plus

  • Nagios, or other system monitoring tools
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office applications Word and Excel
  • Experience with PHP, HTML/CSS/JavaScript,  SQL
  • SSH, version control (CVS, Subversion), SSL, Timbuktu Pro
  • Experience administering &/or using SQL relational database server
  • Familiar with developing and using re-usable code
  • Experience working with researchers
