NOTE:  This is a temporary position that will run through May 31, 2013 with a possibility of continuing into a permanent position depending on need, funding and performance.  The FTE for this position will be between .5 and 1.0

General Description of the Position

University Housing and the University Counseling and Testing Center, units within the Division of Student Affairs, are educational and service enterprises of the University.  Both units support the academic mission of the University of Oregon through our programs and services. 

The Coordinator for Assessment is responsible for University Housing and University Counseling and Testing Center’s assessment and supporting the implementation and fulfillment of both unit’s learning objectives and outcomes, service standards, strategic initiatives and Multi-Cultural Organizational Development; may serve on University Housing, University Counseling and Testing Center, and/or Division of Student Affairs and University Committees.

The Coordinator for Assessment reports to the Director of Residence Life and Academic Initiatives, (with a “dotted line” reporting relationship with the Director of University Housing) and to the Director, University Counseling and Testing Center.

Description of Specific Duties

70%  Research, Evaluation and Assessment 

  • Provide leadership in planning, developing, implementing, analyzing, summarizing and interpreting departmental assessment activities, including single time and longitudinal assessment of behaviors, perceptions, satisfaction, physical environments, learning, community, etc.
  • Compiles research and assessment reports that align with University, Division and departmental mission and goals.
  • Compiles the University Housing and University Counseling and Testing Center annual reports in collaboration with departmental leadership.
  • Provide support and leadership to unit directors and other departmental employees in helping to conceptualize, design, administer, analyze, and present results of quantitative and qualitative research and assessment.
  • Educate and support staff throughout the department (Division, University, Community as appropriate) in the effective development, implementation, analysis and use of assessment.
  • Provide templates for assessment plans, full reports, and executive summaries.
  • Develop, author and/or co-author assessment analyses, reports, and executive summaries and assessment/evaluation components of documents, reports, articles, etc. 
  • Provide department staff, as appropriate, with analysis of collected data to guide and inform practice for current and future operations.
  • Identify and share appropriate data throughout the institution, other institutions and multi-site studies for benchmarking data.
  • In collaboration with institutional colleagues, coordinate annual assessment calendar/scheduling to ensure optimal pacing, to minimize “assessment fatigue”.
  • Integrate data from multiple assessment sources to provide a unified picture of progress toward fulfilling the departments’ strategic plans, learning outcomes, service standards.
  • Facilitate development of assessment knowledge and competencies among members of the departments in collaboration with institutional colleagues.
  • Recommend future areas of inquiry to benefit the department.
  • Ensure all assessment, evaluation, research, etc. conducted by, within and/or for University Housing complies with/meets national, state, local law, University, laws, policies, guidelines, standards and ethical standards.
  • Recommend (and implement as appropriate) appropriate steps to continually improve the effectiveness of the University Housing and University Counseling and Testing Center assessment/evaluation efforts.

20%  Collaboration and Coordination

  • Coordinates the administration and scheduling of surveys and other assessment tools throughout the departments and collaborates with the Director of Student Affairs Assessment and Research for scheduling in within the division and with broader campus partners.
  • Works with appropriate offices on campus to interpret and report results of research and interest to University Housing University Counseling and Testing Center staff.
  • Supports and trains departmental staff on assessment software and technology.
  • Ensures appropriate collaboration between staff and the departments and other offices on campus (Institutional Research, IRB, Registrar, etc).
  • Provides leadership for the departmental assessment team made up of participants from units within the departments.

10% General Responsibilities

  • Assist with the development and implementation of University Housing and University Counseling and Testing Center strategic initiatives. 
  • Represent University Housing and University Counseling and Testing Center on/at various committees, groups, meetings, events, pertaining to assessment/evaluation including the Division of Student Affairs Assessment Fellows group. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience & Education Required

  • An accredited master’s degree in student affairs and higher education or related field.
  • Minimum of 9 credits in Research Methods and/or Statistics.
  • One year of professional work experience or two years of graduate assistant experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative supervisory and colleague working relationships.
  • One year of experience with program assessment and/or evaluation required.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully work with students, faculty members, and staff from diverse groups required.
  • Strong written communication skills required.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills required.
  • Ability to successfully contribute to and support the implementation of the University Housing and University Counseling and Testing Center’s Strategic Plan, Learning Outcomes, Service Standards and other strategic initiatives.
  • Supervision of paraprofessional staff preferred, though not required.

Successful completion of criminal background check required.


Salary based on full time annual amount of 40,000, plus highly competitive benefit package.
