Architectural Design + Building Structures

The Department of Architecture seeks a creative and innovative faculty member for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant or associate professor.  The appointment begins September 2013. 

Teaching:  The teaching responsibilities of the position include design studios in both the undergraduate and graduate programs and lecture and seminar courses in structures and structural design that contribute to the department’s professional programs and the newly established Ph.D. degree program in Sustainable Design.  The department is seeking candidates who address the synthesis of building technologies in their teaching of structures courses and design studios, and have a strong interest in helping students learn to integrate technical systems into architectural design.  The normal teaching assignment will be five courses per academic year, distributed over three quarters.

Research and Creative Work:  Candidates are expected to pursue a well-defined research and/or creative practice agenda with a commitment to sustained inquiry into emerging issues in the field.  These may include, but are not limited to innovative structural design, building performance simulation, fabrication and digital craft, all potentially contributing to sustainable environments.

General:  Candidates are expected to demonstrate the promise of working within the university community, participating in the development of the architectural program with service on at least one administrative committee a year, advising graduates and undergraduates and connecting with the professional community.


1. Candidates must hold at least one degree in architecture (graduate or undergraduate).  An advanced degree in     architecture, engineering or an allied field is required.  A PhD related to building technology is an asset.      
2. Candidates must exhibit potential to engage in integrative, scholarly work and to disseminate the results.
3. Previous teaching experience is desired.
4. Professional experience in architecture or a related field is an asset.

2.  a narrative, 1-2 page description of the candidate’s background, interests, relevant qualifications, and  intentions in seeking this position.  Include a discussion of views about teaching and plans for research/creative practice.

3.   a portfolio (20 page maximum, one hard copy and a PDF on a CD) that includes representative professional/scholarly work, evidence of design capability, and examples of teaching activity or potential (include syllabi, project descriptions and student work from prior teaching as well as suggested descriptions for courses the candidate is interested in developing).

4.   three references with addresses, telephone numbers, and e-mail addresses.
