POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Health Promotion Specialist is a staff member in the Health Promotion Department in the University Health Center at the University of Oregon.  The Health Promotion Department serves as the coordinator for the primary prevention efforts of the University Health Center with the goal of improving the health outcomes for our students and to create a healthy environment.  This is accomplished by providing universal, selective, and indicated prevention services for students in support of the overall mission of the University.

The Health Promotion Specialist maintains collaborative relationships with student leaders, campus, faculty, staff, and community partners to develop a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to health for students.  This position is responsible for developing strategic plans, goals, and measurable objectives for health promotion programs and services.  This requires developing, implementing and analyzing of student health surveys that: 1. provide baseline data and follow-up health data, 2. identify program needs and priorities, 3. evaluate the effectiveness of programs and services and 4. track trends in student health status and behavior.

The successful candidate will utilize a public health approach to create, provide and coordinate wellness and health promotion and prevention initiatives.  The Health Promotion Specialist will incorporate multicultural diversity and social justice concepts and principles into health promotion and prevention services.  The position will be responsible for the supervision of student interns, educators, leaders, volunteers, and student workers.  Research, theories, and evidence based practices will support initiatives.  The Health Promotion Specialist will attend professional conferences; write reports and proposals and other related functions as assigned.

THE UNIVERSITY:

The University of Oregon (UO) is a comprehensive research university with an enrollment of over 24,000 students.  The UO, located in Eugene is 110 miles south of Portland, the state’s major metropolitan area, an hour from both the Pacific to the west and the Cascade Mountains to the east. The Eugene/Springfield metro area (pop. 215,000 and growing) is in a region noted for its dynamic quality of life and progressive cultural environment.  The University is a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU) and of the PAC-12 athletic conference.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in public health, higher education, public health policy, health promotion or other related field.
  • Experience in developing strategic planning goals and measurable outcomes for health promotion programs and services.
  • Demonstrated communication skills that contribute to effective collaborations with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability with cultural competencies and working with people from diverse backgrounds.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two years experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified for the position preferably in a higher education environment.
  • Extensive knowledge of current and emerging issues regarding wellness, health, learning, higher education, socio-ecological model, behavior change, systems, built environments and evidence-based practice and demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge to a population in a higher education setting.
  • Experience in leading coalitions.
  • Experience in social media and health communication strategies.
  • Experience in training and supervising peer education leaders.
  • Experience in data collection, analysis, application and assessment.

SALARY and BENEFITS:

Salary range $49,000 to $53,000 annually, commensurate with experience.  This position is full time, twelve month, fixed term, renewable appointment as an Officer of Administration (OA).  The UO offers a generous benefits package.
