1. Terms of Appointment

a) Assistant Director/Instructor Oregon Leadership in Sustainability

b) Appointment percent:  80%. There is a possibility that the FTE may increase in the future depending upon need, funding and performance.

c) Type of appointment: fixed-term

d) Duration of appointment:  6 months and yearly thereafter as funds are available

e) Annual base rate or range at 100% appointment percent is $38,000 to $48,000
f) Annual Basis:  12 months

2. Essential Functions

Overview

Oregon Leadership in Sustainability (OLIS) is a one year, cohort based, graduate certificate program in sustainability and cities based in the Planning, Public Policy and Management Department of AAA.  The incumbent is responsible for the leadership component of the program and teaching other sustainability courses.  The position is also responsible for recruitment, advising, program development and administrative support for OLIS.  This position reports to the OLIS Director.

Essential Functions

Teaching/Program Development: The incumbent will teach up to 20 class credits during the 12 month year or perform the equivalent in curriculum and program development.  Examples of classes and responsibilities include the development and teaching of the leadership portion of the OLIS program.  This includes the Prologue week, fall, winter and spring terms that cover self-knowledge; communication; and making change in organizations and the community.  The position will support the other OLIS professors in incorporating leadership and teamwork skills building in all OLIS classes.  This position will also have the responsibility for teaching the seminars on the individual capstone project.  Other classes may include:  ecological design; sustainability planning; transportation planning; green building and sites among others.  The position may also be asked to co-teach practicums or provide in-depth sessions on a certain aspect of sustainability to supplement the core curriculum. (50%)

Recruiting: The incumbent will develop and execute national and regional recruiting plans and budget for OLIS.  Examples of activities are: website development and maintenance, on-line marketing, design and production of print materials, event management, and participation in career fairs and conferences. Such participation may include panel presentations and visits with professors to promote the program. Responsibilities also include substantive responsibility for developing and editing weekly blogs, quarterly newsletters, press releases and other material.  The recruitment effort encompasses advising potential and current students about the OLIS fit for their personal and career goals in sustainability.  This area also includes retaining qualified students from initial contact, through the application and acceptance process.  The incumbent will be expected to develop and disseminate the student packet, assist students with negotiating the financial aid process, moving to Eugene, and making the transition to the campus. (35%)

Administrative Program Support: The position will be responsible for course and classroom scheduling, accounting support, and supervising student workers.  Maintaining student files, managing enrollment in OLIS courses, coordinating commencement activities and general office support falls into this category.  The incumbent is also expected to be responsible for the general management of the OLIS office space, and contact with facilities staff as needed, as well as other staff/areas within the University of Oregon, including the registrar’s office, graphics, fiscal services and technology and instructional design. (10%)

Student Advising: The incumbent will team with the program director to provide individualized academic and job-search advising.   Academic advising responsibilities include tracking student progress in the curriculum, providing feedback when students have questions regarding coursework, finding electives on campus, and helping students navigate administrative requirements of the University for graduation.  In the career advising aspect, the program associate assists students with the job-search by providing feedback on resumes and cover letters, researching and posting jobs for students to the OLIS listserve, and provides contacts for internships and jobs. (5%)

3. Minimum/Preferred Job Qualifications and Knowledge

Minimum. The position requires at least a Master’s Degree from an accredited graduate program in the area of planning, public policy, sustainability planning, environmental studies, landscape architecture, architecture, urban design, geography, political science and or economics.  Other fields may also be considered.

Knowledge of sustainability in the built environment is also a minimum requirement as is demonstrated experience and knowledge of at least two of the following sub-areas: climate change, green infrastructure, green cities, green buildings, sustainable cities, sustainable transportation, sustainable water, carbon emission inventories, eco-systems, eco-districts, ecological design, sustainable development; city metabolism; integrated water management; sustainable food systems; climate change and public health; green economy; equity issues.

Minimum of one year of teaching experience in graduate academic setting and/or one year working as a professional in one of the above areas.

Demonstrated excellence in teaching.

Demonstrated ability to interact positively with students, professors and the general community, including those with diverse backgrounds.

Demonstrated ability to organize complex events.

Demonstrated ability to support and enhance a diverse learning and working environment.

Preferred.  Experience in working and or teaching in an existing academic sustainability program. Experience in marketing and recruiting.

4. Description of the university, the community, the program and department

The University of Oregon has over 16,000 undergraduate students and approximately 4,000 graduate students. Of these there are 2,706 U.S. students of color and 1,175 international students.  The University of Oregon is located in Eugene, Oregon, which is at the center of the scenic Willamette Valley, with easy access to snow-capped mountains and scenic coastlines.  The City of Eugene is known for organic foods, active neighborhoods, and has some of the highest walking, biking and transit user rates in the country.

Oregon Leadership in Sustainability (OLIS) is a program of the School of Architecture and Allied Arts, and the Planning, Public Policy and Management (PPPM) department.  PPPM has a strong commitment to sustainability and experiential learning.  PPPM not only established OLIS but it initiated the Sustainable Cities Initiative, which the New York Times called “perhaps the most comprehensive effort by a U.S. university to infuse sustainability into its curricula and community outreach.”  OLIS, as is PPPM is committed to experiential and interdisciplinary learning.
