Secondary Special Education and Transition (SSET) research unit is part of the University of Oregon's College of Education located on the University of Oregon campus.

The SSET conducts federally funded transition-related research directly with a research team to conduct and manage various technical assistance, product development, data collection, curriculum and measurement development, analyses and dissemination activities. The faculty person will work across two federally funded projects operated collaboratively between SSET and the Technical Assistance Consulting Services (TACS) outreach unit of the College of Education. TACS houses the Western Regional Resource Center (WRRC) and the National Center for Post School Outcomes (NPSO) Center as well as other grant and contract funded projects. TACS serves a broad array of clients offering consultation, technical assistance, training, product development and information services which provide the states and other partners access to current special education policy, technology and best practices research.

Appointment Description

Seeking a motivated professional to serve as an Educational Research Consultant for two federally funded grant projects: the National Post-School Outcomes Center (NPSO) www.psocenter.org and the State Toolkit for Examining Post-School Success Professional Development (STEPSS PD) Project which are projects located within Technical Assistance and Consulting Services (TACS) and the Secondary Special Education and Transition (SSET) Research Unit, in the College of Education. NPSO is funded by the U.S. Department of Education Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) and STEPSS PD Project is funded by the U.S. Department of Education Institute of Education Sciences (IES).

The mission of NPSO is to assist state departments of education develop and implement rigorous and practical post-school data collection systems to track the early adult experiences of adolescents with disabilities. These data are required by the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Part B, Indicator 14. Specifically, NPSO offers research expertise, product development, consultation, technical assistance, training, and information services related to the collection, analysis, and use of post-school outcomes (PSO) for youth with disabilities. We assist state departments of education in complying with IDEA requirements and systemic improvement efforts related to Indicator 14, post-school outcome data. 

The purpose of the STEPSS PD Project is to empirically develop and test a professional development (PD) intervention to train district Data Teams to use DBDM to develop, implement, and evaluate action plans that identify evidence-based practices and predictors of post-school success to improve students’ secondary transition skills. The PD will accompany the State Toolkit for Examining Post-School Success (STEPSS), a web-based, data-based decision making tool focused on educators’ use of secondary transition data to improve in-school transition programs for youth with disabilities.

Staff members function in a team environment across projects and contribute to a variety of projects supporting data-based approaches to decision making and improving results for adolescents and young adults with disabilities across both projects.  The successful applicant will serve as career research faculty in the Secondary Special Education and Transition (SSET) research unit in the College of Education.

Research Assistant/Research Associate Duties

  • Assist with Center activities for the formative and summative evaluation plan.
  • Assist in Center advisory activities.
  • Collaborate to develop, implement, and test professional development modules to train states to use data-based decision making to develop, implement, and evaluate action plans that identify evidence-based practices and predictors of post-school success to improve students’ secondary transition skills.
  • Provide high quality, relevant technical assistance activities (e.g., website, communities of practice teleconferences, webinars, videoconferences; phone consultation, onsite consultation and training; state, regional and national conferences; and other information transfer technologies).
  • Travel as needed to complete technical assistance and research assignments (at minimum monthly).

Associate Duties

  • Conduct research-based knowledge development activities, as defined, within a team environment including development of high quality, user friendly tools and products for state use.
  • Conduct evaluation data collection, analysis, and reporting in conjunction with the NPSO evaluator.

Desired Qualifications/Experience

Research Assistant

  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, attention to detail and teamwork abilities.
  • Professional and research skills related to writing, editing and oral communication.
  • Functional understanding of IDEA and state and federal special education monitoring, accountability, and reporting requirements and systems.
  • Proven ability to plan, track, and manage multiple projects in a team environment with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with computers, MS Office, data management software, Internet, email, standard office equipment, presentation software and hardware; and web site design and/or maintenance.
  • Personal or professional experience working with individuals with disabilities and/or their families.
  • Candidates with experience serving the needs of diverse populations are strongly desired.

Research Associate, includes assistant qualifications/experiences listed above, and:

  • Demonstrated proficiency in data management and analyses related to gathering, analyzing and using data for educational improvement planning.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in providing technical assistance including developing and conducing presentations, trainings, and workshops.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in formative and summative evaluation activities (e.g., design, collection, analyses, and reporting).
  • Experience facilitating large and small groups to apply scientifically-based knowledge and solutions to presenting problems.
  • Knowledge of program development, school improvement approaches and evaluation strategies.

Qualifications

Research Assistant at least a masters in Special Education, General Education, Public Policy or related field with an emphasis in adolescent research, longitudinal survey research and program evaluation.

Research Associate at least a doctorate in Special Education, General Education, Public Policy or related field with an emphasis in adolescent research, longitudinal survey research and program evaluation.

Qualified applicants must have proof of eligibility to work in the U.S.

SALARY RANGE (based on qualifications and experience)

Research Assistant (MA): $55,000 – $65,000
Research Associate (Ph.D.): $60,000 – $70,000
