o The University of Oregon Police Department (UOPD) invites applications for a full-time Communications Officer (Dispatcher). This search will be used to fill future vacancies.
o The UOPD Communications and Emergency Response Center (CERC) operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. As a protective services position, qualified candidates must be capable of maintaining consistent attendance at all times. UODPS is transitioning to a sworn police agency over the course of the next five years. The selected candidate must be available to work all shifts to include weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime as needed. Shift differential of $.75 per hour paid for evening and weekend hours. Additional overtime hours may be available.
o Employees who have completed the Basic Telecommunicator course at DPSST are eligible for differential of 10% over base rate.
o This is a classified position represented by SEIU local 503, Oregon Public Employees Union.
o University of Oregon positions that are at least half-time are eligible for excellent benefits, including health and dental, employer-paid retirement, sick and vacation leave, and tuition benefits for employee or an eligible dependent.
o Due to budgetary shortfalls, the person appointed to this position will be required to take unpaid furlough days between date of hire and June 30, 2013.

TO QUALIFY YOU MUST HAVE:
* At least one year in a law enforcement telecommunicators' capacity or similar communications-based experience.
* Ability to read, write, spell and speak in clear concise English; candidates fluent in a second language highly regarded.
* Ability to maintain composure and work effectively during high stress situations.
* Ability to conduct self in a professional and respectful manner.
* Ability to follow directions and university administrative policies, procedures, and guidelines.
* Ability to prioritize and multi-task effectively in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment.
* Ability to effectively operate and monitor campus fire, life safety, and security systems, including video surveillance images.
* Valid driver's license, good driving record, proof of insurability, and ability to operate a vehicle in order to make deliveries and/or to support the operational needs of the department.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills and a sensitivity to effectively interact with a highly diverse campus community.
* Ability to work effectively with persons from diverse socio-economic and racial backgrounds.
* Ability to maintain legible handwriting and accurate keyboard skills (approximately 40 words per minute).
* Ability to pass a full background assessment that includes: criminal history, driving record history, personal history, prior employment history, physical examination, psychological examination.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position consistently interfaces with University of Oregon Police Officers, using multiple communication devices. In addition, Public Safety Communications Officers operate and monitor various alarm, emergency notification, surveillance and communications systems with in the UODPS Communications and Emergency Response Center. Communications Officers may also be assigned to field-based tactical dispatching roles to support large campus events. Duties include:
... answering multi-line phone and responding to alarms, and dispatching Public Safety Officers, police, fire, or ambulance and/or student patrol as appropriate; responding to campus Public Safety Officers' requests for information on status of persons and property (e.g., driver's license checks, wants and warrants, automobile ownership); accessing the Law Enforcement Data System (LEDS) or other telecommunication equipment to obtain and relay information; monitoring fire and police agencies radio frequencies to be aware of activities that may effect campus; launching the UOAlert! text messaging and other emergency notification systems; answering general requests for information from the public; maintaining radio call logs, noting time, location, and action taken; checking reports for accuracy and enter information into computer-based log.
... assisting with the administration of the UOPD ARMS computer-aided dispatch and reporting system, providing file and database management for public safety via handwritten and computer-generated reports; data entering documents; producing reports and responding to requests for information; providing reports to Director/Chief or Deputy Director/Deputy Chief and other command staff on incident call status and other matters; gathering statistics and preparing Clery Act annual reporting document; conducting driver record checks for internal insurance requirements; providing support for evidence, property, and records functions, including receiving documents and materials, data entry, court services (delivering citations and report submission), and document filing.
Position is fast paced and can be stressful. UOPD Communications Officers must be able to maintain composure and professional presence while accurately gathering and giving emergency information to the public and officers. The job requires sitting for long periods of time and much of the time is spent at video display terminals.

Describe an instance during your previous employment when you were extremely busy with the day's activities were constantly being interrupted, and then you had to deal with an unhappy or disgruntled customer/individual. Include in your answer if you were able to maintain your composure, while continuing to provide excellent customer service, and how?
4. The UO Police Department is a 24 hour, 7 day per week operation with employees assigned to various shifts. Have you worked in a previous position that required unexpected overtime and rotating shifts? If not, how do you expect such an assignment would impact your family obligations and life outside work?
