o University of Oregon College of Arts and Sciences Information Technology Support services (CASIT) invites applications for full-time System Administrator (Operating Systems/Network Analyst). Position will be required to work some weekends and provide emergency coverage in a 24/7 environment.
o This is a classified position represented by SEIU local 503, Oregon Public Employees Union.
o University of Oregon positions that are at least half-time are eligible for excellent benefits, including health and dental, employer-paid retirement, and tuition benefits for employee or an eligible dependent, sick and vacation leave.
o Due to budgetary shortfalls, the person appointed to this position will be required to take unpaid furlough days between date of hire and June 30, 2013.

... a basic foundation of knowledge in complex technical problem solving that would normally be obtained through a bachelor's degree, in a technical field preferably computer and information science, or equivalent technical training and/or extensive demonstrated independent technical problem solving experience.

Required qualifications:

* Three years of systems administration experience Unix-based system.
* Ability to understand and communicate effectively with researchers and programmers on the intricacies their research and how it interacts with the infrastructure that is necessary to support that research.
* Ability to perform well in a fast-paced environment with short timelines and fast-approaching deadlines.
* Proficiency with Unix (Mac OS X and Linux) system administration, and knowledge of X Windows, LDAP, network infrastructure, and TCP/IP.

Preferred qualifications:

* Experience working on systems supporting MPI, C/C++, Fortran, and Matlab.
* Background in science and experience working with researchers and scientific programmers as a team.
* Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of diverse backgrounds.
* Strong multitasking skills and proven leadership ability.

This position participates as a member of CASIT systems administration group and supports the computing systems infrastructure for various research groups within the College of Arts and Sciences. Half of the position's time is spent providing these services to researchers in Geophysics/Oceanography. Duties include:
... systems management, including maintaining high performance computing facility, hardware and OS upgrades, and interoperability.
... application support, including working with researchers on compiling and tuning scientific applications to run on the cluster.
... installing and upgrading computers; user management; implementing security policies and permissions; creating disk shares and assigning quotas.
... performing system documentation, including documenting monitoring processes; producing and maintaining clear and thorough technical documentation as it pertains to operating procedures, change management, and hardware/software inventories of the systems and network.


Position works in a datacenter setting.

Detail the kinds of systems you supported, the operating systems, virtual servers, mail servers, etc. Indicate also the number of users served, the applications supported, and the nature of the work these systems supported. Be sure to describe in detail any work you have done to support systems involved in scientific or academic research.

2. Give examples of situations where you communicated with clients or customers that were difficult to work with. What techniques do you employ in these situations to help communicate clearly and achieve an equitable outcome for you and the client?

3. Tell us about the most difficult Linux related project you have completed.

4. Imagine you have an application that is mission critical running on a Mac Xserve, this application needs to be migrated to a VMware ESXI environment, the VM will be running Redhat. Assuming that the application can be run on Redhat, generally what would be your migration process?

5. Please provide an example of script you have written (for example, Powershell, Bash, Applescript, Perl etc.) this can be in any language. Please tell us the language and generally what it does.
